About Oliver Cerqueira, D.O., FACP

Oliver Cerqueira, D.O., FACP, specializes in internal medicine at Utica Park Clinic. His professional areas of interest include obesity, diabetes, hypertension, complex symptom management and primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic disease.

Dr. Cerqueira has always had a love for science and fascination for how the human body operates. He said, “Internal medicine provides me with the ability to identify and cure disease in patients across many different organ systems. It also gives me the opportunity to care for patients who have very complex medical situations, including those who have multiple life-altering conditions. My experience and expertise in hospice and palliative care allows me to engage patients and their families in the more terminal phases of illness; together, we can make decisions about what is important in terms of goals of care.”

Dr. Cerqueira enjoys getting to know who his patients are outside of the exam room and what motivates them in life. He adds, “Getting a complete picture of a patient helps me to be a better physician. I enjoy explaining medical concepts to my patients in a way that is understandable so that they can makes the best decisions possible. Further, I practice with a process known as ‘shared decision making,’ so patient autonomy is preserved.”

Dr. Cerqueira chose medicine as his career because he wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. He said, “I went into medicine so that I could forge personal relationships with patients and families, as a conduit to excellent health care. As I was growing up, I witnessed these interactions firsthand either as a patient myself or as the child of a patient. Even at a young age, I noticed that many of these interactions were seemingly cold and without the deserved level of empathy.”

He adds that if you come in for an appointment, you may not expect his New Jersey accent. He said, “I have been here in Oklahoma for almost 20 years, so while I don’t exactly sound like a typical ‘Jersey guy,’ it is clear I am not originally from here. However, I love the word ‘y’all’ and use it all the time!”

Outside of work, Dr. Cerqueira enjoys spending time with his two sons and wife who is an academic internal medicine physician at OU-Tulsa. He adds, “We love to travel and love discovering other cultures, particularly by way of food! We also spend a lot of time with animal care; we have four dogs and two African Sulcata Tortoises who all require lots of love and attention!”
