About Chris Guinn, D.O.
Christopher Guinn, D.O., specializes in family medicine at Utica Park Clinic. He is also a field surgeon in the Oklahoma Army National Guard, where he holds the rank of Captain. His professional areas of interest include functional/lifestyle medicine, helping people get the most out of life by staying active and managing chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension.
Dr. Guinn decided to pursue a career in medicine after working at an insurance company for nearly five years. โI had the realization I wanted/needed to do something different and more with my life,โ he said.
He decided to go to EMT school and didnโt count on how much he would enjoy medicine.
โSo, from EMT school I started right into paramedic school, figured if I was going to do it, I might as well be the highest level of prehospital provider I could be. About halfway through paramedic school and a few weeks from getting married, I had the thought that Iโm just going to be a doctor instead. So, with my soon-to-be wifeโs subtle eye roll and approval of my latest โbig ideaโ I took the six college credits I had to my name and started the coursework to apply for medical school, took the MCAT and got accepted. I had worked at State Farm for almost 17 years by the time I left the company to start medical school,โ he said.
While in medical school, Dr. Guinn initially wanted to work in emergency medicine. As time went on, he realized he liked having follow ups with his patients and seeing their progression. โI chose family medicine as it gives me the opportunity to work with patients in the clinic setting on their acute and chronic health issues, as well as I am able to follow up with them on return visits. Plus, family medicine still lets me work in the ER, which I have been doing for almost a year now. I am a field surgeon in the OK Army National Guard, so keeping up emergency medical skills is important to me and my career,โ he said.
When asked how he builds relationships with patients, Dr. Guinn said, โI just follow the golden rule and treat people with respect. I have a very laid back, go with the flow personality and talk to everyone like they are my best friend. I feel like I am able to explain complex things in non-complex ways. I also love to tell jokes and I think laughter truly is the best medicine.โ
Dr. Guinn likes to remind patients take things in moderation and find an activity you enjoy and go after it. โRide bikes, walk, run, golf, be active somehow,โ he said.
Outside of work, Dr. Guinn likes to go cycling, mountain biking, playing soccer, swimming, politics and just being outside enjoying the warm weather. โI would love to take care of the Broken Arrow/Tulsa cycling communities, some really great people,โ he said. Dr. Guinn also enjoys spending time with his wife and their two teenagers.
